ABOUT THE RIDE:

THE WILDFLOWER IS THE ANCHOR OF THE CHICO VELO CENTURY SERIES. It was first offered as an organized event in 1981. While it poured most of the day, about 60 riders struggled through it. The hard part was making this wonderful 85 mile ride into a century.

A WONDERFULLY DIVERSE ROUTE,
this century begins in Willows, taking old Hwy 99 south to Maxwell along the Sacramento Wildlife Refuge, where the Metric Century starts/finishes. All riders zigzag south & west on farm roads toward the Coast Range. There are some short gravel* sections.
The riders, metric and full century, climb the serpentine switch backs of the Leesville Grade, hitting elevation at Windy Point Summit, 1,700' continuing north to Lodoga, 1,280'.

Rice Valley Tandem

THIS RIDE BEGAN AS THE UNKNOWN VALLEY TANDEM RALLY out of Willows one very stormy Sunday in 1988(?). Two tandems and one single rider (Bill O'Donnell) left. Three hours later, one of the tandems and O'Donnell crawled into Maxwell, a total distance of 18 windy miles, only to find that mud & rock slides closed the road ahead. So much for the first tandem rally!
