For many years, Chico Velo was a group of loose-knit riders until we officially obtained our nonprofit standing in 1980. Our first official organized ride was on a rainy day in 1981 with 100 riders. Today, the Chico Velo Wildflower Century attracts up to 4,000 riders annually and is still growing! Learn more about our Century Series.
Our rides and membership dues allow us to advocate for all cyclists in Northern California and beyond. We represent your interests with organizations including the Chico Bike Advisory Committee, BCAG Transportation Advisory Committee, the local Safe Routes to School Coalition, and the California Bicycle Coalition. We're a proud partner Affiliate of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, as well as a member of the League of American Bicyclists, the Alliance for Biking and Walking and the International Mountain Bicycling Association. We encourage and educate cyclists at many local community events. We are proud of the efforts between the club and the city, including upgrading to Silver status with the League of American Bicyclists' Bike Friendly City program in 2013! Join our efforts to improve the five Es in Chico by contributing to the Chico Velo Foundation, established to support local bike-related projects and activities. Or, apply for a Chico Velo Foundation grant!

Ivan Garcia, Director
Ivan can be found out on his bike most weekends exploring Chico’s best routes and he is never short on ideas on how to improve Chico Velo, our rides, and our community’s bike-friendliness. During the week, he keeps busy at BCAG (Butte County Association of Governments).

Geno Gruber, Director
Geno has a simple vision for cycling in Chico – unity. Geno has been an active cyclist since the mid 80’s. He is not fast, but he enjoys racing. Geno has introduced his 10- and 12-year old kids to cycling and loves a 30 mile ride with them as much as a 60 mile ride with the fast group. Chico has some of the best options for year round cycling in the US and Geno wants the world to know it by helping our city once again be recognized by the cycling publications for its commitment to safe routes for commuters and its wonderful terrain and group options for both recreational and competitive cyclists.

Neal Bordenave, Treasurer
Neal is a Chico State Business/Finance grad, and an avid cyclist who resides in Butte Creek Canyon. He can be found riding Honey Run and Centerville often. He is a Lifetime-Member of Chico Velo in the community.
|
Forough Molina, Director
As a child Forough began riding bikes in Chico as a means of transportation. This grew into a passion for advocacy for non-motorized transportation in high school and college as well as a stint of bike racing in the late 80s for Chico State. Forough has been involved with Chico Velo since that time, as a member, a volunteer, and/or participating in Velo rides. Forough remains an avid cyclist and as a teacher and a parent of 4 children who all ride bikes all over Chico, having safe and well-planned bike routes and roads throughout the city of Chico and the surrounding area is very important to her. She is proud to be a Life-time Member of Chico Velo.

Harry Mills
Harry is a senior at Chico High and has been a bicycle commuter since he was four years old. He has been a volunteer for Chico Velo for many years, including registration at the Wildflower Century since 2002. He is an advocate for cycling by students, from kindergarten through college. Harry is fluent in Spanish and does conservation research with sea turtles in Yucatán (pictured).

Laura Van Dervoort
Laura’s love of cycling started when she took her first spin class. She has participated in America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride, The Death Ride, Mount Shasta Century, Sierra Century, Live Strong Ride, and a number of others throughout the last ten years. Through cycling she has raised money for Team and Training with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Laura rides to reflect, think, and meditate in addition to exercising. Her metaphor for life is a bike wheel. Each spoke is a part of life, physically, mentally, spiritually, etc. and each spoke must be developed or it can be a bumpy ride. She has completed the Death Ride five times but her all-time favorite ride is still the Chico WildFlower.

Staff
Janine Rood, Executive Director
530.343.8356
Janine embraces cycling in all forms, from basic transportation, to recreation, to touring to racing, but she hasn’t yet mastered the unicycle. She considers herself incredibly lucky to be able to spend her time working to improve conditions for cyclists, as well as encouraging new and existing riders, young and old, in a community that is so supportive of cycling.
|
Stacy Canada
When she’s not busy organizing events for Chico Velo, Stacy is either working on her Masters’ degree at Chico State (in Recreation/Event management!) or at the AS Sustainability Program, riding her new bike, playing with her dog, or sleeping!
|
Zena Chan
Zena works hard to keep the Velo office running like an organized and efficient machine. She grew up riding bikes for basic transportation and she’s busy passing that gift on to local children (including her own!) with a monthly Family Ride in Bidwell Park!

We fondly remember Ed McLaughlin and his commitment to Chico Velo...

Chico Velo mourns the passing of Ed McLaughlin in the early hours of Thursday, May 24, 2012. Ed's contribution to cycling and community in Chico and Northern California can't be overstated, and we will miss him - his passing marks the end of an era.
Read "One Chico Christmas Eve" by Tim Snapp, remembering Ed's accident on Dec 21, 2007, and the Christmas Eve vigil for Ed that year.
