Included on our website are various forms and maps you can download, view and print out on
your computer -- all you need is the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader
software.
If your web browser splashes a bunch of GIBBERISH on your screen instead of actually DOWNLOADING the .pdf file, you need to CONFIGURE your web browser...
A couple of years ago, Adobe created Acrobat
software which lets anyone read ANY document that was created on ANY computer using ANY
software. For example, a Microsoft Word document (or Quark or Pagemaker or Word Perfect
or...) that is converted into an Acrobat .pdf file could be viewed (and printed)
from just about any computer. The big bonus being it would look virtually identical to the
master file that created it, but would be a much smaller file without having to worry
about fonts, graphic links, etc. And if you have ever tried to transfer files between the
Macintosh and Windows using different kinds of fonts -- you know what a real breakthrough
Acrobat is.
The real beauty of Acrobat is that it
builds "fake" fonts that look so close to the original you can't tell the
difference. And it effectively compresses graphic files down real small, making it much
faster to send .pdf files over the internet. It is so reliable that many government
agencies are now using Acrobat -- the IRS uses it for all of its downloadable tax forms on
its website.
You can download the free Acrobat
Reader from the Adobe website. Be sure to bookmark our website first before jumping off to
Adobe's site. The Acrobat Reader is a large file (about 3000K) so expect to devote some
time to downloading. But we highly recommend you take the time to download the Acrobat
Reader as an increasing number of websites are using Acrobat for their downloadable files.
It comes in four versions:
- Macintosh
- Windows95
- DOS
- Sun
Once you have downloaded Acrobat, you may still have to configure
your web browser to automatically open Acrobat when you download a .pdf file otherwise you
might get a lot of gibberish on your browser screen.
Actually, we prefer NOT viewing .pdf
files on the screen, but forcing them to download to your computer instead. You simply do
not configure your web browser to read them. We would rather download the file, then open
with Acrobat Reader later on for printing.
HOW TO CONFIGURE NETSCAPE FOR ACROBAT
- Go to the General Preferences window
under the Options Menu. Click on the Helpers Section.
- Make a new helper for Acrobat by
clicking on New, then enter into the Mime Type box the word "application" and
into Subtype and Extensions boxes the word "pdf".
- Click on the Browse button and find the
Acrobat Reader software you downloaded and installed on your hard disk.
- Lastly, click on the Launch Application
button and click in "OK" to close the window.
Now when you download a file with "pdf" on the end of it,
Netscape will automatically launch Acrobat and let you view and print the file.
HOW TO CONFIGURE MICROSOFT EXPLORER
FOR ACROBAT
Microsoft's Internet Explorer is automatically set to download a pdf
file to your hard disk (and asks you where you want it saved). You can then open the file
later with Acrobat for viewing and printing.
- Should you want Explorer to open
Acrobat for you, go to the Options window under the Edit Menu Bar.
- Click on helpers, then scroll down and
select on the "PDF Files" listing.
- Click on the "Edit" button,
then the "Choose" button and find the Acrobat Reader software you have installed
on your hard disk.
Now instead of merely downloading the file, it will also open the
Acrobat Reader for you to view or print the file.

YOU WILL LEAVE
THE CHICO VELO WEBSITE TO GET
THE ACROBAT READER. BE SURE TO BOOKMARK
THIS PAGE BEFORE YOU LEAVE!
